Research in the Classroom as a Pedagogical Principle for Teaching Mathematics in Basic Education

This paper reports and reflects upon a math teaching activity that involved student-led classroom research. This activity is part of a broader ongoing investigation being conducted at a federal technical school in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This ongoing research seeks to investigate alternative methods of teaching mathematics in basic education and this reported work constitutes an experimental component of that investigation. The method used was action research with a qualitative approach. Students conducted classroom research on freely chosen topics involving mathematics and presented their findings to the whole school at a small event. The paper concludes that research in the classroom is a viable path for fostering the learning of mathematical content in basic education.
