Mathematics and black and white photographs in High School

The research investigates a teaching practice with black and white photographs produced by a group of high school students. The practice was carried out in two 2nd year high school groups at a public school in Porto Alegre (RS), seeking to answer the question: "What mathematical elements emerge from the practice of photography among high school teenagers?". Photographs were taken with a cell phone and a DSLR digital camera, involving the study of shadows and framing. Based on the photographs selected, elements that emerged from the researchers' interpretive process were listed and organized into three units of meaning: the mathematics that emerged in the act of photography; mathematical elements addressed in the production and processing of the photographs; relationships between beauty, mathematics and photography. The research reaffirmed the pedagogical potential of working with photographs in math classes.
