Rectangular configuration, combinatorial reasoning, multiplicative comparison: problem solving by 5th grade students of Elementary School
Keywords:
Rectangular Configuration, Combinatorial Reasoning, Multiplicative Comparison, Problem SolvingAbstract
This study is an excerpt from a Master's degree research. Its goal is to compare the problems addressed on the first and on the fifteenth day of classes/investigation meetings, aiming to highlight the development of the initial and the final learning outcomes of the students participating in the study. The concepts and meanings of multiplication and division covered on these two days involved rectangular configuration, combinatorial reasoning, and multiplicative comparison. This research is pedagogical in nature. The data collection took place in a 5th-grade class. The students' problem solving became a material for reflection and analysis. The results of this study demonstrate a significant development in students' acquisition of new mathematical knowledge and the refinement of previous understanding, as well as in their ability to solve problems involving the concepts and meanings studied.
