Considerations about aspects of the professional development of teachers who teach mathematics

This article is the conclusion of a research project on aspects of the professional development of mathematics teachers. It is a work that discusses the results of two other articles we produced about: (i) personality in teaching, considering a reciprocal integration between subjectivity and professional identity of teachers; and (ii) production of mathematical knowledge specific to teaching in a political context, under the idea of problematized mathematics. Methodologically, in this communication, we adopted a qualitative approach in which we articulated the results of these articles on two fronts: (1) problematizing the content of mathematics and teaching achievement in mathematics; and (2) features of the professional development of teachers of the research group. Our results indicate that personal experiences are directly linked to the approaches to teaching mathematics and their effects, and that both are potential factors in professional development – this is because it is impossible to separate the person from the teacher.
