Measurement units and their applicability in rural communities of Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul, at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century

This paper discusses the use of units of measurement by teachers and former students in rural communities in Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul, in the early second half of the 20th century. This is a qualitative study that is based on oral history. In addition to visits and informal conversations, two research instruments were applied, which were answered by four teachers and two former students from rural schools. The teachers worked with units of measurement in practical classroom situations, using the school garden to measure the flowerbeds, the height of the students and the distance from the school to each one's home. The former students reported that they had contact with the main units of measurement at school, but that these units were applied at home, in their daily work. Thus, the importance of working with measurements, whether in the classroom or through family context, in a practical and useful way for the students' lives is evident.
