Author Guidelines

1. Submission

Submissions to Educação Matemática em Revista – RS (EMR-RS) must be made exclusively through the journal platform: https://www.sbembrasil.org.br/periodicos/index.php/EMR-RS/submission.

The journal accepts original and unpublished manuscripts, written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, focused on the field of Mathematics Education, in the following categories: scientific articles, experience reports, and academic essays.

Scientific articles may derive from empirical, theoretical, documentary, bibliographic, or literature review research, provided that they present a clearly defined problem, consistent theoretical grounding, an explicit methodological path, rigorous analysis, and an effective contribution to the field of Mathematics Education. Literature review manuscripts must present a broad and systematized state of knowledge, with a description of the procedures for searching, selecting, organizing, and analyzing the corpus.

Experience reports must present educational, formative, extension, investigative, or professional experiences relevant to Mathematics Education, articulating contextualized description, theoretical grounding, critical analysis, and discussion of the learning, results, or contributions produced. Merely descriptive reports, without problematization, analysis, or dialogue with the literature in the field, will not be accepted.

Academic essays must develop theoretical, critical, argumentative, or propositional reflection on a topic relevant to Mathematics Education. They must present a clearly defined thesis, question, or position, supported by consistent argumentation and dialogue with academic production in the field. Opinion texts without theoretical grounding or analytical contribution to the field will not be accepted.

The journal does not accept book reviews, communications, interviews, or texts that are not aligned with the scope of Mathematics Education. The editorial team may reject, at the initial editorial screening stage, submissions that do not meet the journal’s scope, accepted categories, ethical standards, or formal submission guidelines.

At the time of submission, the author(s) must correctly complete, in the OJS system, the full details of all authors, including full name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, and ORCID, when requested by the system. These metadata are used in the editorial workflow and in the future publication.

For peer review purposes, the manuscript file attached to the submission must be anonymized, that is, it must not contain author identification, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, ORCID, identifiable acknowledgments, revealing self-citations, references to groups or projects that may identify the authors, or file metadata that may compromise double-blind review. Authorship data must be entered directly into the platform.

The manuscript must follow one of the official EMR-RS templates, according to the citation and formatting style adopted in the submission:

The chosen style must be followed fully and consistently throughout the manuscript, including citations, references, tables, figures, charts, equations, and other textual elements. Rules from the two styles must not be mixed in the same manuscript.

At the time of submission, authors must submit, together with the manuscript, the Statement of Authorship, Originality, Responsibility, Ethics, Transparency, and Licensing: [Statement link].

Submitted manuscripts will be evaluated through the double-blind peer review system.

Manuscripts must be 15 to 25 pages long, including titles, abstracts, footnotes, visual elements, and references. The sections “Mandatory final statements” and “Publication data – editorial completion” are not counted within this limit. Exceptions must be justified in the “Comments for the Editors” field and will be analyzed by the editorial team.

Each manuscript may have a maximum of four authors, and at least one of them must hold a doctoral degree.

After manuscript approval, authors will be asked to insert the complete authorship information into the final file, including name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, and ORCID, according to the journal’s official template.

Only one manuscript per author will be published in the same issue of the journal.

EMR-RS does not charge submission, review, publication, distribution, or download fees.

2. Formatting

The file must be submitted in .doc or .docx format, following the specifications of the official EMR-RS template.

The text must be formatted on A4 paper, with top and bottom margins of 3.0 cm and right and left margins of 2.5 cm. Manuscripts must be 15 to 25 pages long, including titles, abstracts, footnotes, visual elements, and references. The sections “Mandatory final statements” and “Publication data – editorial completion” are not counted within this limit.

The following categories are accepted:

• Scientific articles;
• Experience reports;
• Academic essays.

The manuscript must follow the structure, styles, and order of presentation indicated in the official EMR-RS template. The internal organization of the text must be appropriate to the chosen category, avoiding the mechanical adoption of fixed sections when they do not correspond to the nature of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to use section and subsection titles that are clear and coherent with the argumentative, methodological, or analytical path developed in the manuscript.

Title

The manuscript must present three titles, in the following order: Portuguese, English, and Spanish, according to the template. The title must be concise, informative, and coherent with the submitted category.

Authorship data

Authorship data must be entered in the journal system, OJS, at the time of submission, with correct completion of all authorship fields: full name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, and ORCID, when requested by the system.

For peer review purposes, the manuscript file attached to the submission must remain anonymized, without author names, affiliation, e-mail address, ORCID, identifiable acknowledgments, revealing self-citations, or any other element that may identify authorship.

After manuscript approval, complete authorship data must be reinserted into the final file, according to the editorial team’s instructions and the official template.

Resumo, Abstract, and Resumen

The manuscript must present a resumo in Portuguese, an abstract in English, and a resumen in Spanish, in this order, according to the template.

Each abstract must contain 100 to 150 words, in a single paragraph, and must present, in a synthetic and objective manner, the problem or theme of the manuscript, the objective, the methodological or argumentative approach, the main results, contributions, or conclusions.

For experience reports, the abstract must state the context of the experience, its objective, theoretical grounding, procedures developed, and contributions to Mathematics Education. For academic essays, it must state the theme, thesis or central question, argumentative path, and theoretical, critical, or propositional contribution of the text.

Keywords

Three to five keywords must be provided in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, according to the template. Keywords should be clear, specific, and, whenever possible, aligned with controlled vocabularies in the field of Education, such as the ERIC Thesaurus, Brazilian Education Thesaurus/INEP, or UNESCO Thesaurus.

Semantic equivalence should be maintained among keywords in the three languages, avoiding mechanical translations of terms that have established forms in the field of Mathematics Education.

Main text

The body of the text must follow the styles, font, spacing, indentation, and organization provided in the official EMR-RS template.

Headings and subheadings must follow the styles in the template. Authors are encouraged to use sections and subsections appropriate to the type of manuscript, such as Section 1, Subsection 2.1, Section 2, or more specific titles, according to the argumentative, analytical, or methodological structure of the manuscript.

The journal provides templates in two style versions: ABNT and APA. The chosen version must be followed fully. Citation, reference, table, figure, or note rules from one style must not be mixed with those of the other.

Citations and references

In the ABNT version, citations must follow ABNT NBR 10520:2023, and references must follow ABNT NBR 6023:2018. Direct quotations of up to three lines must be incorporated into the paragraph, in double quotation marks, with author, year, and page. Direct quotations of more than three lines must appear as a block quotation, without quotation marks, with a 4 cm left indentation, single spacing, and a font size smaller than the body text. In indirect citations, page numbers are optional, but author and year are mandatory.

In the APA version, the APA, 7th edition style must be followed. Direct quotations of fewer than 40 words must be incorporated into the paragraph, in double quotation marks, with author, year, and page or another locator. Direct quotations of 40 words or more must appear as a block quotation, without quotation marks, with a 1.27 cm left indentation. In paraphrases, author and year must be indicated; the page is optional but recommended when it helps locate a specific idea.

Latin expressions such as et al. and apud must be used according to the style adopted in the template. Secondary citation should be avoided and used only when the original work cannot be accessed.

All works cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and all listed references must have been cited in the manuscript. DOI should be provided as resolvable links, preferably https://doi.org/xxxxx, whenever available.

Footnotes

Footnotes must be brief, kept to a minimum, and used only when they add relevant information that does not fit into the flow of the text. They must follow the formatting provided in the template.

Visual elements: tables, figures, charts, and equations

Tables, figures, charts, and equations must be inserted as close as possible to the passage in which they are mentioned. Every visual element must be cited in the text before it appears.

Images must have good resolution, sharpness, and legibility. Equations in image format will not be accepted; they must be inserted using the native equation tool of the text editor.

In the ABNT version, tables, figures, and charts must present a title above the element and Fonte: below it, according to the template.

In the APA version, tables and figures must present number and title above the element and, when necessary, Note. below it. In APA, charts structured in rows and columns should be treated as tables; schemes, conceptual maps, flowcharts, and diagrams should be treated as figures.

Numbered equations must use sequential numbering in parentheses, aligned to the right, and must be mentioned in the text.

Mandatory final statements

The mandatory final statements must remain in the approved final manuscript. In the version submitted for double-blind review, information that may identify authorship, funding, research groups, projects, or acknowledgments must be removed or anonymized when necessary.

The following statements must be completed according to the template:

• Data availability;
• Funding;
• Conflict of interest;
• Ethical approval and consent;
• Author contribution – CRediT;
• Use of generative AI;
• Acknowledgments, when applicable.

When applicable, research involving human participants must report approval by a Research Ethics Committee, institutional Ethics Committee, IRB, or equivalent body. The absence of an approval statement does not, by itself, prevent submission or publication, provided that its non-applicability is properly justified and that the ethical procedures adopted are explicitly described in the manuscript and in the Statement of Authorship, Originality, Responsibility, Ethics, Transparency, and Licensing.

The use of generative AI cannot replace intellectual authorship, scientific interpretation, critical validation of results, or the authors’ final responsibility. AI must not be used to invent, fabricate, simulate, complete, or manipulate data, results, evidence, citations, or references.

Editorial elements of the final version

The editorial elements of the final version will be completed and checked by the EMR-RS editorial team, according to the template, including DOI, publication data, citation format, license, copyright, and other editorial metadata.
