History

History

Educação Matemática em Revista – RS (EMR-RS) was created from the commitment of the Brazilian Society of Mathematics Education, Rio Grande do Sul Section (SBEM-RS) to strengthen production, circulation, and academic debate in the field of Mathematics Education in Rio Grande do Sul and in Brazil. Its trajectory reflects the collective effort to establish an editorial space devoted to scientific dissemination, the sharing of experiences, and the exchange of knowledge among teachers, researchers, and students in the field.

Origins and foundation

EMR-RS was created in a context of growth and consolidation of SBEM-RS. The desire to establish a journal of its own, capable of welcoming and disseminating Mathematics Education production developed by teachers from Rio Grande do Sul in schools and universities, was shared by colleagues from different regions of the state.

In the first issue of the journal, published in May 1999, Elena Haas Chemale, then General Secretary of SBEM-RS, emphasized that the realization of this project represented the fulfillment of a collective dream. According to her account, the expressive adhesion of SBEM-RS members, which at that time had already surpassed one thousand associates, provided the political and financial conditions necessary for the board to launch Educação Matemática em Revista, Rio Grande do Sul, no. 1.

The inaugural issue brought together research papers and an interview with Professor Ocsana Danyluk, recognized as one of the founders of the regional section. Since then, the journal has become a collective heritage of SBEM-RS, whose continuity and strengthening depend on the shared commitment of boards, editorial teams, authors, reviewers, and readers.

Editorial trajectory and consolidation

Throughout its history, EMR-RS has established itself as an important space for the dissemination of research, reflections, and experiences in the field of Mathematics Education. Its trajectory is directly linked to the work of different editorial teams, which helped shape the identity of the journal and ensure its continuity over time.

From 2009 onward, the journal began to be published in two issues per year and also in online format, broadening the dissemination of published works and their reach within the academic community. In this context, Prof. Dr. Maurício Rosa became responsible for the editorial work of the online version. The print version was maintained until 2010. Since 2011, the journal has circulated exclusively in digital format. More recently, from 2025 onward, EMR-RS adopted continuous publication flow, reinforcing its publication dynamics and the dissemination of scientific production in the field.

Continuity, commitment, and perspectives

Over more than two decades, EMR-RS has reaffirmed its commitment to scientific dissemination and to the qualification of debate in Mathematics Education. As an open-access journal, it contributes to the democratization of knowledge by broadening the reach of research and reflections produced in the field.

At present, the journal remains committed to strengthening its editorial work, expanding its visibility, and consolidating itself as a reference space for the circulation of studies, experience reports, and discussions relevant to Mathematics Education. At the same time, it keeps alive the commitment assumed since its creation: to be a plural, dynamic space committed to the challenges, transformations, and perspectives of the field.

EMR-RS constitutes a space of memory, scientific circulation, and strengthening of Mathematics Education in Rio Grande do Sul and in Brazil.
