What do we mean when we talk about experimental practices in Mathematics teaching?
Keywords:
Mathematical experimentation, Games, Manipulatives, Experimental activitiesAbstract
Linked to research critiquing the traditional Games trend in Mathematics Education, this study investigates experimental practices and reimagines the use of manipulatives. Through a documentary analysis of curricula from Brazil and high-performing countries, it questions the true meaning of experimental activities in math teaching. Findings reveal that the effective use of manipulatives transcends their mere physical presence in the classroom, requiring profound shifts in teachers' pedagogical mindsets and solid methodologies. We argue that "Mathematical Experimentation"—integrating hands-on experience, reasoning, and active knowledge construction—should be legitimized as an independent Trend in Mathematics Education, as it is essential for fostering more equitable, participatory, and creative learning environments.
