From Shortcut-Based Mathematics to Mathematics as a Social Practice: Challenges for the Development of Specialized Knowledge among Teachers Who Teach Mathematics
Keywords:
Mathematics Education, Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching, Initial Teacher Education, Mathematics as a Social PracticeAbstract
This article problematizes the mathematical knowledge required for teaching practice, based on discussions by Discussion Group 6 (DG6) of the Regional Forum on Initial Teacher Education for Teachers Who Teach Mathematics. It aims to analyze challenges in developing this knowledge and its implications for initial teacher education. With a qualitative and reflective approach, it examines the DG6 Report through recurring themes and relationships in two axes. In the first axis, results reveal persistent relationships focused on reproducing procedures and “shortcuts,” indicating the need for conceptual reconstruction. In the second, they highlight overcoming the neutral, universal, and decontextualized view of mathematics, recognizing its social and cultural dimensions. The study concludes that initial teacher education must articulate specialized mathematical knowledge and critical context understanding, fostering a humanizing practice.
